Jingle bells, Do they know it’s Christmas, Winter Wonderland, All I want for Christmas…, Santa tell me, Santa Claus is coming to town and not to forget Last Christmas!! Band Aid, Michael Bublé, Mariah Carey, Elton John, Wham! and all the others are singing their hearts out to bring us in Christmas mood. I was never in a country where Christmas songs are having such a high value than here in the UK. Since December you can hear them non-stop and everywhere and it’s allowed to sing along loud and proud.
Christmas is not as colorful, soppy and overwhelming here as it is in the US but you set up your Christmas tree beginning of December too, Christmas sweaters, Santa hats, elf stockings and Reindeer antlers can be wore for every occasion, sitting nicely dressed in a posh restaurant with a paper hat is completely fine and as I already mentioned Christmas songs are a huge thing. I think it’s one of the career goals of British singers to be number one in the charts end of the year with a proper Christmas song. It doesn’t have to be a musical milestone, way more important is that the song spreads joy and everyone can sing along. A perfect example: Merry Xmas everybody from the glam rock band Slade. And believe me there’s nothing more christmasy than sitting in a pub with friends, drinking some pints, wearing a Santa hat and singing Fairytale of New York together with The Pogues!
It just wouldn’t be Christmas in the UK if you don’t care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree, if there wouldn’t be some magic in that old silk hat they found, if we wouldn’t gonna have a party tonight, if we wouldn’t deck the halls with boughs of holly and if we wouldn’t stay another day. You better watch out if your granny does always tell ya that the old songs are the best and who knows if there will be snow in Africa but let’s hope that this year, to save you from tears, you’ll give your heart to someone special and not to a bum, a punk, an old slut on junk! Ach well, I wish it could be Christmas everyday!
Merry Christmas y’all ❤️
